How Dry Needling Works
Functional dry needling targets myofascial trigger points — hyperirritable spots within tight muscle bands that can cause local pain, referred pain, and restricted movement. By inserting a thin, sterile needle directly into the trigger point, your therapist can elicit a local twitch response that releases the muscle and resets the nervous system's pain signals.
The result is often immediate reduction in muscle tension, improved range of motion, and decreased pain. Dry needling is particularly effective when combined with manual therapy and therapeutic exercise as part of a comprehensive physical therapy plan.

Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?
No. While both use thin needles, they are based on different principles. Dry needling is rooted in Western medicine and targets myofascial trigger points to release tension and restore normal movement. Acupuncture is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine and targets energy pathways.
Does dry needling hurt?
Most patients feel a brief, dull ache or muscle twitch when the needle reaches a trigger point — this is a normal and often therapeutic response. The sensation is typically short-lived. Many patients are surprised by how comfortable the treatment is.
Is dry needling safe?
Yes. At Pivotal PT, dry needling is performed only by certified clinicians using sterile, single-use needles. It is a safe and well-researched technique when performed by trained professionals.
Do you accept insurance?
We are a cash-based practice. If desired, we can provide detailed superbills you can submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement. HSA, FSA, debit, and credit cards are accepted. This service is available for current patients. An initial evaluation will be needed for anyone new to the clinic to ensure that dry needling is in fact appropriate for your presentation. The initial evaluation is $170, and follow up visits are $88. Treatment packages are available for a discounted rate. Be sure to talk to your therapist about this at your first visit.
